Gordon Townson a Retired Police Officer who coordinates the Jasmine Charity Challenge could not resist the temptation to get in on the act himself and raise monies directly for St Machar Academy's chosen charity CHAS (Children's Hospice Association Scotland) On 19 and 20 April 2012 Gordon will do a lone cycle from the steps of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to the steps of St Machar Academy in Aberdeen an approximate distance of 130 / 140 miles.

He will have a back up vehicle driven by friend and former colleague Retired Police Officer Allan Hendry who has been involved and very supportive of many of the Jasmine Charity Challenge events. Gordon said " Last year one of the teachers at one of the other academies did a half marathon run to assist with fundraising and other teachers have become involved singing or playing instruments at concerts et .I think the students like to see teachers and other adults really getting involved. I have done several long distance sponsored cycles in the past for several different charities including CHAS one of my favoured charities following emotional visits to both Rachel House and Robin House ........experiences which have stayed with me. I commend all that CHAS does "

Kevin Stewart MSP who has made a substantial personal financial donation will see Gordon and Allan off from the steps of the Scottish Parliament but he himself will wisely take the train to Aberdeen overnight and be in time to meet them on the steps of St Machar Academy and welcome them back to Aberdeen on the Friday afternoon. Kevin who has been an energetic supporter of CHAS especially the recent expansion of the CHAS at Home Care Service in Aberdeen said " I am delighted to see the students of St Machar Academy so committed to CHAS. I know the academy have had some very imaginative fundraising events and I hope this cycle will also capture their imagination and help raise monies. I think it is vital to keep a charity's profile really high and events such as this do just that and I willingly lend my support" Allan Hendry said " Gordon and I go back over 30 years. Age wise I give him him 10 years which is why I am doing the driving but this will be a great experience for us both .......STILL GAME ....NAE LIMITS !

Danny Cowie said " The whole ethos of the Jasmine Charity Challenge is to get everyone involved in a way they really enjoy . Our annual Jasmine sponsored walk was this year 14 miles through the beautiful Glen Esk Valley involving 70 employees, friends and family. I therefore wholly commend this cycle and wish Gordon and Allan the best of luck and I am confident that the Jasmine Charity Challenge will continue for many years to come inspiring all those it engages with!"

The Jasmine Charity Challenge engages in the first instance with high performing 'Can Do' students in the S4/S5/S6 age groups placing them very much in the spotlight. There are however many students of excellence throughout the academies who may or may not be academic. Senior management at each academy have therefore been asked to choose one student of excellence from the whole school from whatever year group S1 - S6 and from whatever subject area whether it be sport, drama, music, media, communications, enterprise, good citizenship etc to receive a Jasmine Charity Challenge - ACE Award for 'Student of Excellence'. This will be so inclusive and a powerful example of how the Jasmine Charity Challenge brings schools, charities, businesses and communities together so successfully.

  jasmine

The Jasmine Charity Challenge is an exciting private sector funded initiative bringing schools, charities, businesses and communities together in a very positive way. Students experience real enterprise gaining valuable links from the classroom to the workplace developing excellent skills and the ‘Can Do’ attitude. They gain a fuller appreciation of corporate social responsibility which they will be able to build upon in their future careers.

This success story needs to be told on the big screen and thanks to Cineworld Union Square becoming a sponsor the story of the academic year 2010 - 2011 will unfold on the big screen in a  showing of The First Chapter. Six academies are currently involved :- St Machar and Kincorth from Aberdeen City and Portlethen, Westhill, Kemnay and The Gordon Schools Huntly from Aberdeenshire.  Several more academies will be encouraged to engage in the Jasmine Charity Challenge 2011-2012 when the focus will be on charities which help children. These additional academies will include those situated within or close to the ‘Energetica Corridor’ which runs from Aberdeen Airport and Bridge of Don in the south to Peterhead in the north.

For full information on ‘Energetica’ please visit www.acsef.co.uk
An increased number of academies will necessitate increased numbers of sponsors with more businesses becoming involved in this wonderful journey to help create a smarter, safer and more successful Scotland.

Bridie O’Connor – is a woman of substance who in the mid 90s was instrumental in bringing Inchgarth Community Centre under community control being ‘run by the people for the people!’

Jennifer Gibbon – is the original ‘Garthdee Quine’ being a pillar of support for thousands of children running dance schools and related fundraising. She is caring, compassionate and respected.
Compered by Community Engagement Consultant, Gordon Townson the Spirit of the Community Awards placed a deserved spotlight on a very vibrant community and delivered a heart warming evening.
